Watercolor painting has been an artistic medium valued for its transparency and luminosity. Pigments are applied with a wet brush to typically white paper to control a colors shade and intensity. This technique relies on the white of the paper to provide the paintings luminosity - creating lighter tones by thinning with water.

Tempura Painting is much like watercolor painting except that the colored pigments are mixed with a water soluble binder - typically egg yolk. It was the primary method for creating panel paintings and illuminated manuscripts in Europe until it was largely replace by oil painting around the 16th Century.
