Commodes, Chests & Coffers

Chests of Drawers is the modern day terminology for what started off as Commodes - the 18th Century French word for a cased set of drawers - often times decorated with marquetry, inlay and gilt ormolu - purposed for storing clothing and other personal items.

In the English speaking world the term commode also took on the connotation of a bedside cabinet with a space for a chamber pot. As indoor plumbing became more common, the term carried over to the modern toilet. This has created some confusion, but antique enthusiasts still use "commode" to refer to the original elegant antique case of drawers.

A Coffer is typically thought of as a large, sturdy chest used to store valuable items. Trunks and Blanket Chests are types of Coffers but are typically used for storage of less valuable articles for day to day use.
