COMMENTS: Rare Texas Oil Painting by Alexa Smith (Mrs. J. T. Smith) 1896-1943. Alexa Smith moved to Texas when she was very young from Millersburg, Kentucky where she was born. She attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas and settled in San Antoni in 1903. She had many instructors including Rolla Taylor, Xavier Gonzalez, Bernhardt Wall, Harry Anthony De Young, Dawson Dawson-Watson, and Jose Arpa. Smith exhibited her work throughout Texas. She was part of the the San Antonio Artists Guild and the Southern States Art League.

He added this interesting history of the Texas Missions: "This painting is the San Jose Mission in San Antonio. One of the five Missions built on the San Antonio river between 1718 and 1731, with the most famous one being The Alamo. Each of the missions are exactly one mile apart on the river and the national park service now runs all missions except for The Alamo which the State of Texas runs."
