Pair of Carved and Lacquered Wood Courtyard Couplets, Displaying sixteen characters heightened by gilt paint - Eight characters each panel. Ninth Year of the Guangxu Period (1879),

Comments: Chinese courtyard couplets, often referred to as Spring Festival Couplets or Door Couplets are endowed with traditional Chinese verses displayed on doors, particularly during the Spring Festival. They are traditionally created in pairs, with each couplet on a different side of the door frame. These couplets express wishes for good luck, fortune and happiness, often times reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the household for the coming year.
